Director's Summer Program (DSP): The Director's Summer Program (DSP) is a highly competitive program that seeks to reach the nation's most outstanding undergraduate mathematics majors. Each summer, we invite exceptional undergraduate students to put their skills to the test solving problems in mathematics, cryptology and communications technology in support of the national security mission. These problems often involve applications of abstract algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, probability, statistics, combinatorics, graph theory, algorithms, and computer science. State-of-the-art computing resources are available to all students. Computational algebra packages, including Mathematics, MATLAB, Magma and MAPLE are available, in addition to a variety of statistics packages. The DSP is looking for students who have distinguished themselves in undergraduate research or national mathematics competitions. At the beginning of the summer, students are presented with introductory lectures on modern cryptography and a set of problems that Agency Mathematicians are actively investigating. Each student chooses one or two problems as the focus of his or her research. Throughout the summer, students are mentored by Agency experts, collaborate to solve challenging problems, and present their work in both technical talks and papers, which are internally published at NSA. About the Program: The DSP is a 12-week program that runs from the end of May through mid-August each year and is open to students majoring in mathematics. Computer science and Physics majors with either a minor in math or a strong math curriculum may also apply. Applicants should have demonstrated superior mathematical aptitude. One full year of upper level mathematics (abstract algebra or analysis) is strongly recommended. Some computer programming experience is desirable. Application Deadline: Applications are accepted May 1, 2020 - October 15, 2020. Admissions are on a rolling basis and applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as is practical to allow sufficient time for security processing and review of their application. The application period runs from 1 May - 15 October 2020. However, the Agency will be making selections for early acceptance into the program on a rolling basis throughout the application period and anticipates filling approximately 1/3 of the available positions prior to the closing of the application period. Cryptanalysis and Signals Analysis Summer Program (CASA SP): The Cryptanalysis and Signals Analysis Summer Program (CASASP) gives undergraduate mathematicians and computer scientists a chance to contribute to mission-essential technical operations at the National Security Agency (NSA). Our mission is to transform collected data into a format analysts can readily consume for intelligence purposes by analyzing signals and protocols, and overcoming security measures. Each summer we invite twelve students to learn, use, and further NSA's tradecraft as they work on operational problems of national importance. If you possess imagination, initiative and intellectual curiosity, apply for the CASASP. About the Program The CASASP runs from the end of May through the middle of August and is open to students majoring in mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Some programming experience is desirable. CASASP begins with classified briefings on modern cryptography and on operational projects which will form the basis for research throughout the summer. Problems involve applications of math, statistics, computer science, reverse engineering, and software development. We work with data from many sources, analyze a wide range of technologies, and provide access to cutting-edge computing resources. Results are integrated into production systems to provide new capabilities to our organization. Application Deadline: Applications are accepted May 1, 2020 - October 15, 2020. Early Acceptance Incentive: The CASASP will fill up to 1/3 of the available positions via an early acceptance incentive. All applications that are complete as of July 31, 2020 will be reviewed for early acceptance. Candidates will be notified in early September regarding whether they will move forward for further processing in accordance with the early acceptance timeline. Any candidates not selected for early acceptance will remain in the candidate pool and will be re-evaluated after the October 15th application deadline. Qualifications for both the DSP and CASA SP are: - Must be a U.S. citizen. - Must be eligible to be granted a security clearance. - Must be an undergraduate student majoring in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Physics. Other majors with either a minor in math or a strong math curriculum may apply. Students that are completing their degree after the fall or spring semester are also eligible to apply. - Must be available for an operational interview and other applicable processing between October 2020 and April 2021.
- Students are paid a salary commensurate with their education level. - Receive annual leave, sick leave, and paid federal holidays. - Participation in agency-wide extracurricular programs. - Students who attend schools in excess of 75 miles from Ft. Meade, MD, are eligible for a round trip airfare ticket to and from school or mileage reimbursement up to the cost of a government-issued airline ticket. - Daily transportation to and from work is not provided. Students participating in the program are highly encouraged to bring a vehicle. Carpooling with other students MAY be available but is NOT guaranteed. - Subsidized housing accommodations are available upon request if school is located in excess of 75 miles from NSA main HQs campus.
